Here, you'll find a list of 100 direct sales companies that you can work with to start making money from home.

Do read until the end though before deciding whether to pursue a career in direct sales.

What are Direct Sales Companies?

If you don't already know, or perhaps you're not quite sure, direct sales companies, are companies that allow people, like you, to sell their products for them.

A couple of well-known examples of these types of companies are Mary Kay and Avon, both of which sell products in the beauty and makeup sphere.

These companies, as I said earlier, are also sometimes known as multi-level marketing (MLM) companies.

Basically, you purchase a starter kit of products from a company, like Mary Kay, and then sell them from home, at events, or wherever you choose.

You then get a commission on everything that you sell. You can also earn money from other people's sales if you have recruited them to the company.

Are Direct Sales Companies a Pyramid Scheme?

Before we get started on the list of companies, let's address the elephant in the room.

Pyramid schemes.

Advertisements

Since direct sales companies do have a similar structure to pyramid schemes, there's the concern, among some people, that they are indeed just pyramid schemes.

MLM companies are not all pyramid schemes.

Why, you ask?

Well, it all comes down to one key difference: Pyramid schemes involve no products. Direct sales companies involve products.

In a pyramid scheme, people are paid to recruit more members.

In direct sales opportunities, people are paid to sell a company's products. Yes, direct sales companies may pay you to refer other people, but the main focus is earning a commission on the products that you sell.

Pyramid schemes are illegal. But direct marketing companies are not.

Now, this doesn't mean that MLM companies are without their issues though. There are some concerns about the ethics of it. For example, higher up members earn commissions from sales of agents in their downline who are essentially risking financial loss. You have to purchase inventory that might not sell, and there are many horror stories about MLM.

Even though they are not technically pyramid schemes, MLMs all follow a pyramid structure where the people at the top, who're known as "uplines" make money off the sales commissions of the people they've recruited to work underneath them, who're down as their "downlines."

Some of these businesses rely heavily on recruiting new members, which is where the comparison to pyramid schemes is often drawn.

Why try direct sales companies?

Direct sales companies can work well for anyone who wants to make money from home. This is something that can be done full time or part time depending on your schedule.

Now, I'll go into the pros and cons in more detail below the list of companies, but, suffice to say, the main reason why you would want to give MLM a try is that it allows you to make money selling products, without the hassle of actually manufacturing or designing any products yourself.

It's as simple as getting products from the company, and then selling them, which you can do from home.

As far as work at home opportunities go, this can be pretty profitable and compared to selling your own products, it can be a lot simpler.

Like I said earlier though, working in MLM does have its downsides and I am not sure that it is the best way to earn money because there are so many stories from people who've had bad experiences working with direct sales companies.

I'll go into the pros and cons more later so that you can decide whether MLM is for you.

How Much Money Can You Make with Direct Sales Companies?

Now for the important question – how much money can you make with direct sales companies?

It really depends on the company that you work with and its particular pay structure.

Also, the number of sales you make is going to determine how much income you bring in.

There are a few ways you can make money as a direct sales consultant, including:

  • Tiered commission plans – so you earn money when you make sales.
  • Recruiting other people to your team
  • Commission on your recruit's sales
  • Bonuses for meeting certain sales targets.

With these companies, you can earn commission when you make sales. Exactly how much commission you will make depends on the company.

Here are some examples:

  • Scentsy: Earn 20% commission plus bonuses.
  • Pampered Chef: Earn 20% to 33% commission.
  • WineShop: Earn 20% to 44% commission depending on your leadership level.
  • Mary Kay: Earn up to 50% on the Mary Kay products you sell at suggested retail.
  • Beauty Society: Earn 25% to 55% commission.
  • AdvoCare: Earn 20% to 40% commission on sales from your customers when they order through your personal Distributor microsite.
  • PawTree: Earn 33% commission.

Let's say that you sell $500 worth of product a month and you earn 50% commission, then that's $250 that you will earn. Sell that every month, and you could make an extra $3,000 a year. If you sell $1000 worth of products every month and get 40% commission, you would make $400 a month or $4,800 a year.

Commission and recruitment structures can vary quite a lot from company to company.

Overall though, the more you sell and the more people you recruit, the more money you are going to make.

What is the Most Profitable Direct Sales Company?

Some of the most profitable direct sales companies include:

  • Amway – 8.4 billion revenue (2019)
  • Herbalife Nutrition – 5.5 billion revenue (2019)
  • Avon – 4.7 billion revenue (2019)
  • Mary Kay – 3 billion revenue (2019)

Pros & Cons of Working with Direct Sales Companies

As you can see from the list above, there are a LOT of direct sales companies out there!

Really, you can find an MLM opportunity in pretty much every category you could think of from home goods to beauty products.

But, the question is, just exactly how beneficial are these companies?

I covered this a little at the start of the article, where I talked about MLM companies being good because they offer you the chance to sell stuff, without the hassle of manufacturing products yourself.

In this section, I just wanted to go into a little more detail about the pros and cons of MLM companies.

This can help you to decide whether or not direct sales companies are for you.

Benefits of Direct Sales Companies

Okay, so I just want to start out with the pros. Working with direct sales companies can be beneficial.

Here's why you might want to try selling stuff with MLM companies:

You don't have to produce products yourself

Selling stuff is something that many people want to do but they just don't know where to get started. Designing and manufacturing your own products is a hassle and it's expensive.

That's why MLM companies can be so useful.

They have the products really for you to sell!

This means that you don't have to worry about anything like getting products made or sourcing them yourself. All you need to do is find the customers.

You can work for yourself

If you have always wanted to have your own business and be your own boss, then direct sales companies can be a good option.

You work when you want to, and you can work from your own home, or wherever you want to sell your products. Now, this gives you a lot of freedom and is a good way to earn an income if you want an opportunity that isn't your typical 9 to 5. This brings us to the next benefit of MLM companies…

It can be a part time or full time opportunity

Since you do work for yourself, and sales, rather than a set number of hours worked, are the goal with MLM companies, it means that you can work as little or as few hours as you want.

So if you want this to be a part time gig that you can do to bring in some extra cash – perhaps you're a stay at home mom or dad who's looking to earn some extra money – or you want to make money on the side of your regular job, you can.

If you want this to be your full time job, then that may be possible too.

Of course, in order to generate sales, you are going to need to put a decent number of hours into your business. But, you get to decide how much you work.

There are tons of opportunities out there in all categories

I mentioned this briefly before – there are so many different MLM companies out there. And, there are tons of different options available whether you are looking to sell beauty products or workout supplements.

This means that you can find a company that suits you. Some people want to sell cookware and others want to sell clothing. That's what makes this opportunity good for a lot of people.

Cons of Direct Sales Companies

Okay, so now I just want to cover some of the downsides of direct sales companies.

Sales quotas can be high

Okay, so MLM is all about selling, obviously. While you are working for yourself with this opportunity, you will still need to hit certain sales quotas when you are just starting out.

A lot of the companies will require new members to sell 100s or even 1000s of units in their first month. This can be a lot of pressure on newcomers. If you don't have much experience in sales yet, these high quotas can be very difficult to meet. Of course, not all companies will require members to hit huge quotas.

That's why it's important to read the fine print before you sign up. Check to see if there are any sales quotas that you'll need to meet, and, if there are, consider whether you will be able to hit that target.

It can be tough to get sales

Particularly when you are first starting out, getting sales can be really tough. Although some companies provide training to members, selling products can still be challenging. You will need to be an outgoing person who doesn't mind being a salesperson because that's essentially what you are when you work with direct sales companies.

Now, I see so many people saying that it can be tough to get sales. There are posts on the Huffington Post with people who've had a negative experience, and stories from people on Reddit about their experiences with direct sales companies.

One Redditor says:

  • "You're buying an overpriced product and reselling it, trying to make a profit, in a saturated market. It's a recipe for disaster. There's a reason these people recruit, it's because you don't make money selling."

You have to purchase a starter kit

For most companies, you will need to purchase a starter kit to, well, get started. Yes, most companies require new members to purchase a starter kit and sometimes this can be expensive.

The price of starter kits varies from place to place. So, do check to see how much it costs and see if it aligns with your budget.

Here are some examples of how much starter kits cost at a few different companies:

  • Pampered Chef: $79, $159, or $279 depending on the starter kit you choose.
  • WineShop: $25, $99, or $239 depending on the kit you select.
  • Mary Kay: $30 for an eStart kit which is basically digital resources, like apps, and digital marketing resources, or $130 for a starter kit that includes products.

You have to invest in products

It's not just a one-time starter kit that you have to purchase. With these companies, you have to purchase inventory and hope that it sells.

One Redditor says:

  • "You're either a victim paying for overpriced products, or you're a predator making others your downline so you can make money off them buying said overpriced products."

Another person on Reddit says:

  • "Yes, they are all bad — because there are always people who can't afford to do so being encouraged to "invest" their money into what will ultimately be nothing but a big financial loss for them."

There are horror stories about MLM companies

A quick look on sites like Reddit suggests that a lot of people have a really bad experience with direct sales companies. Some people say they had to purchase a bunch of inventory and then were stuck with products that they couldn't sell.

Now, this doesn't mean that there aren't success stories out there. It just means that you need to be careful and not invest too much money at the start. I'll cover some tips for success in the section below.

It's not just the big sales targets that are an issue. Many people say that many of these companies are "cult-like" and are pretty aggressive in trying to get you to recruit new members. I would recommend having a read of this thread on Reddit for stories from people who've worked in MLM.

Tips for Success with Multi-level Marketing

Working with direct sales companies can be a good way to make money but it's not as easy as simply selling something. If you want to be successful with MLM, you will need to make sure that you follow the tips in this section.

Below, you will find some really simple tips and tricks that you can use to ensure your success when working with direct sales companies.

Choose a company with products that you love

It will be much easier for you to make sales when you are selling a product that you actually love.

I mean if you have no interest in cooking, then selling cookware, for example, may not be the best thing for you.

On the other hand, if you are interested in makeup, then working with a direct sales company that sells beauty products would be ideal for you. Of course, you don't have to choose a product that fits your interests, but it can make selling easier and more enjoyable. It's not just the type of product you sell that's important, but also the quality of it. Selling products that are, in your opinion, of good quality is also important.

Only purchase inventory within your budget

Don't feel pressured into purchasing a ton of inventory. Remember, that you may not sell these products. If you don't, you will be out of pocket. Basically, if you spend $100 on inventory, you have to be okay with that if it doesn't sell. If you desperately need that $100 to pay bills, then do not spend it on inventory.

Start out slowly. See if you can make a few sales before you purchase more products. You don't want to waste money and end up sinking a ton of cash into inventory that doesn't sell.

I'm not saying that you won't have success selling these products, but it's important to be realistic and ease into the whole thing. Selling stuff can be difficult, and that's why you'll want to gain experience first, and then you can purchase larger quantities of inventory.

Be honest and ethical

Being genuine is an important trait in every aspect of life, and direct sales is no different. Being honest and ethical when marketing your products or recruiting new members is so important. People don't want to feel duped. If they do, they are unlikely to work with you again in the future.

Many people associate direct selling with sales reps that overhype things or even use deception to bring in new recruits. While this is how some people are, it shouldn't be standard.

You should instead be honest when dealing with customers and potential recruits. If you have a product that you love, and you are enthusiastic about it, then that should be enough to promote it.

Don't go over the top when selling or make exaggerated or false claims. Not that you would, but some people do think that this is the type of behavior they have to engage in order to sell products.

Good business conduct – where you act in an honest and ethical way – ensures that your customers and recruits won't feel as though you have tried to dupe them. Instead, they will likely be more loyal to you.

Don't bother your friends and family

Okay, so this is sort of in the same vein as above and is just good business practice – don't barrage your friends and family. It will annoy them, and it could end up costing you friends if you are not careful.

Honestly, just because your family or friends care about you, it doesn't mean that they want to buy stuff from you.

I mean, sure, if you have a friend who loves to cook, and you are selling cookware, then a quick mention of your products could be a good idea. But that's it. If your friend doesn't show any interest in purchasing from you, then back off.

Although many companies suggest that you make a list of people you know so that you can market to them, it's better if you can find customers outside of your social sphere. Treat MLM like any other business in which you focus on selling to people who actually want the products you have to offer, rather than to people who just happen to be nearby.

Identify your target market

Like I said above, you want to sell to people who actually want to purchase the product you have to offer. So, you'll need to identify your target market. One of the biggest mistakes that multi-level marketers make is that they look at everyone as a potential customer or recruit. That's just not effective.

It's like Starbucks advertising its coffee to someone who doesn't drink it. It just doesn't make sense, right? You want to market products to people who are actually looking for the type of product it is that you are selling.

For example, someone who you never see wearing makeup won't be an ideal customer for someone who's selling Mary Kay products, right?

Just like someone who never works out isn't going to be interested in workout supplements. It just doesn't work that way.

You will have much more success if you identify your target market and then direct your marketing efforts toward them.

You won't waste time trying to sell to people who simply don't want the products you are offering. This is such an important step. So, think about who your target market is, and focus on selling to them.

Also, if you are looking to recruit people, make sure you follow a similar thought process. Identify people who are actually interested in the market the company is focused on. That way, you'll have much more success. After all, many people who start a business in direct sales were customers first who liked the products so much that they decided that they wanted to sell them!

Know where to find your customers

So, you've identified your target customer, so how do you go about finding them?

Well, you're going to want to advertise where your potential customer hangs out. What websites do they visit? What organizations do they belong to? What magazines do they read? Those are all good starting points.

But, also, consider starting a blog or advertising on social media sites where your demographic may spend their time.

Always have brochures, business cards or samples with you

Marketing is such a big aspect of direct sales so you really need to be prepared to sell at all times.

If you tell someone that you sell Mary Kay products, for example, and the person asks you if you have a brochure, and you don't have any on you, then you could be missing out on a potential sale.

So, make sure that you have a brochure or a business card with your website on it to give to potential customers.

And, it's also a good idea to have some samples with you that you can give out to those who are interested.

If your budget allows it, try to keep full-size products in your home or in your car for a quick sale. This works particularly well with smaller products such as eyeliner, or moisturizer because people are more likely to impulse buy those types of products.

Decide on the best place to sell products

I said earlier that you need to know who your target market is and where to find your customers.

You want to market products where they hang out.

So, where exactly can you market your new business?

Well, there are lots of places where you can sell products including:

  • Through a blog
  • On social media
  • Face-to-face consultations
  • One-on-one online consultations
  • Facebook lives
  • Hosting an at-home party
  • Bridal showers
  • Baby showers
  • Pop-up shops
  • Public demonstrations (like vendor shows or cooking classes)
  • Email list

In terms of which is best, it really depends on what you are selling and who your target customers are.

Multi-level Marketing Alternatives

To be honest, I don't think that working with direct sales companies is a good thing. I just think there's too much negativity around this type of business model. I like to keep things ethical and only recommend things that I think are worthwhile.

I do think that some people do succeed in this line of work, but where one succeeds there seem to be 1,000s who fail at this.

MLM is definitely not for everyone.

These options are much better:

  • Sell affiliate products.
  • Start a blog.
  • Sell t-shirts and other merch with print on demand companies.
  • Start a YouTube channel.
  • Sells books on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
  • Get a freelance gig like freelance writing or graphic design.
  • Sell courses on Udemy or Skillshare.

All of these options are so much better than MLM because they require no upfront cost. With print-on-demand companies, for example, all you do is upload your designs, and the company handles the printing, shipping, and customer service for you. You only pay a fee when you make a sale.

It's a similar thing with KDP, you can upload a book, and people will buy it, and you earn a commission on the sale.

Closing Thoughts

There are so many direct sales companies out there, right? It's great because you can find companies in so many different categories, so you can choose something that suits you whether that's makeup, cookware, or workout supplements.

Now, I can't really recommend this that highly as a way to make money. It isn't the quickest or easiest way to make money. It does take a lot of effort and you have to be good at marketing, because, well, that's the whole point. You are selling stuff to people.
