Drug Ads, Family Vlogs: Internet Debates What Will Be Outlawed in 20 Years - Newsweek

Image
What parts of life that we take for granted may one day be outlawed? The internet has shared ideas in a viral thread on Reddit's "Ask Reddit" forum. User u/AMRunner posted the question on Tuesday, amassing over 27,000 votes and 19,000 comments. "What currently legal thing do you expect to be illegal in the next 20 years?" the Redditor asked. Among the most popular responses came from user u/TxGood, who suggested, "Commercials for drugs." The United States and New Zealand are the only countries in the world where direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs is legal. Drug manufacturers spent about $6 billion dollars per year on media ads between 2016 and 2018, according to the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO). While many commenters supported banning direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical ads, most doubted that they would ever be outlawed in the United States. During the height of another Covid lockdown in November 2021, Rachel, who asked to use her first-name only, joined Arbonne—a multi-level marketing company, or MLM, that sells beauty and wellness products like face serums and protein shakes.  The mother of three, who was caring for her five- and three-year-old and her one-year-old baby, had been using Arbonne products for seven years and was a big fan of them. The 31-year-old Mississauga, Ont. resident had extended her maternity leave and wasn't getting paid, so decided to take the plunge into sales in hopes of earning some cash.  "Being on mat leave and socially isolated, it was actually nice to have a way to connect with the community," she says. She sold most of her products through her existing network, and was also able to connect with other Arbonne salespeople via

Image
2. Living Beyond Their Means Fun opportunities come up for teens, like, all the time. Road trip! Music festival! Essential new party look. But fun costs money. And it's almost too easy to blow your budget on emotionally driven impulse buys. What's the best defense against over-spending? A good offense. "Build a budget and have a plan for how you're going to use your money before you spend," says Eaton. If your kid is more of a big picture thinker, try a "three bucket system" wherein an equal portion of his income (whether it's from an after school or summer job, birthday gifts or an allowance) gets allocated into spending, saving and giving. If he's more detail-oriented, get granular. Help him write up a detailed budget with line items for every essential need (school supplies, cell phone) as well as wants (dinners out, video games). "Spending more than you earn can lead to unnecessary money emergencies and debt," warns

With each of these offers, it's important to read the fine print. For example, some offers may be available in some states but not others. Also, fair warning: These accounts typically require you to maintain a minimum level of deposits in your account if you wish to avoid service fees.
